Key learning points
- [é/er/ez] is pronounced as in 'écrire'.
- Some adjectives follow different patterns. 'Naturel' is 'naturelle' in the feminine form and 'heureux' is 'heureuse'.
- There are many cognates in French which can be used to infer meaning of surrounding words and understand context.
- Cognates may look very similar to English but sound quite different so attention must be paid to pronunciation.
Keywords
[é/er/ez] - pronounced as in 'écrire'
Cognate - words with the same meaning and same or similar spelling in English and French
Common misconception
Add -e to all adjectives to make them feminine.
Some adjectives follow different patterns. 'Heureux' changes to 'heureuse' and 'naturel' changes to 'naturelle'.
Teachers may want to encourage pupils to rehearse, learn, record and/or perform themselves saying the poem in the last lesson cycle, if time permits.
