      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can take inspiration from underwater creatures to create a circular weaving.

      Key learning points

      1. Know that curved lines and patterns are found in nature.
      2. Know that a loom can be shaped like a rectangle or circular, to create weavings in different shapes.
      3. Know that weavings can be embellished.

      Keywords

      • Curved - something which has a bend or a rounded shape

      • Patterns - something that repeats in a regular way, like shapes, colours, or numbers

      • Circular - something which is round and shaped like a circle

      Common misconception

      All looms are rectangular.

Remind children that some weavings are made on square or rectangular looms, but weavings do not have to be made on looms with straight sides. Looms can be curved.

      Teacher tip

While some children are working on Task A in their sketchbooks, groups of children could be invited to work on Task B (2). Printed images of each selected sea creature could be placed next to the circular loom, to support children with selecting shapes and patterns that they wish to include.

      Equipment

Large hoops, fabric and yarn cut into lengths, string.
