Why this why now

This unit builds on pupils prior learning about what a democracy is. Pupils take a more in-depth look at how democracy works in the UK by exploring what parliament is, how we can hold those in power to account and the role of the press and media and select committees within democracy. The unit encourages critical thinking about governance, representation and citizens rights.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils should understand what democracy means and the key features that define it.
  • Pupils should recognise the structure and role of the UK Parliament.
  • Pupils should have a general awareness of the media’s role in society and the importance of free press.
  • Pupils should be familiar with the concept of devolution and its impact on governance.
  • Pupils should understand basic democratic participation methods and how citizens can get involved.
