Why this why now
This unit introduces pupils to how computer programs are built and carry out actions. Using block-based programming they explore controlling sprites, selecting backgrounds and creating or adapting projects, alongside designing simple algorithms. This is the first step in developing computational thinking, giving pupils the foundations in logic, sequencing, and problem solving that will be revisited and expanded upon.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils will know how to turn on and log in to a digital device.
- Pupils will know how to perform basic actions to control a digital device, (point, click, move, type).

Creating animations in programs
In this unit pupils are introduced to on-screen programming through ScratchJr. Pupils will explore the way a project looks onscreen by investigating sprites and backgrounds. They will use programming blocks to use, modify, and create programs that move objects.
