      Painting using computers

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use digital tools to draw a picture.

      Key learning points

      1. Digital devices are controlled in different ways.
      2. The paintbrush tool makes marks and the erase tool removes marks.
      3. The fill tool adds colour to a closed shape.

      Keywords

      • Painting program - what we use to make digital artwork

      • Tool - something you select in a program to help you do a task

      • Erase - a tool that removes marks

      • Fill - to fill up a closed shape with colour

      Common misconception

The screen is like a piece of paper, so you should be able to touch it to draw.

Digital devices work in different ways. Some devices use a finger but other devices can be used with a mouse, a trackpad or in other ways.

      Teacher tip

It is important that pupils see how to manipulate the devices that they use in the lesson. Take time before practical activities in the lessons to physically demonstrate the correct ways to operate the devices used.

      Equipment

Pupils will need access to a device with software that provides freehand digital painting tools. Examples in this lesson use paintz.app https://oak.link/paintz
