Why this why now
As pupils begin secondary school, they are using the internet and connected devices more independently and in increasingly complex ways. At this stage, it is important that they understand what is happening behind the scenes when data is shared or services are accessed online. This unit builds a foundation for making informed decisions about privacy and security, helping pupils see how network design and data transmission affect their experience. Learning this now equips them to navigate technology critically and responsibly as its role in their lives expands.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils should have some experience of using websites.
- Pupils should be able to describe the features of a network.
- Pupils should be aware of how the internet facilitates online communication and collaboration.
- Pupils should be able to describe the concept of privacy and how the internet does not always afford this.
