Why this why now

Knowing how to prepare and cook food equips us with the ability to create healthy dishes and meals, gaining food skills and knowledge which can be applied in the future. Learning is framed through familiar contexts and experiences from the Early Years Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals, such as managing self and language skills, are further developed. In future units, food skills are revisited to develop accuracy, and new skills introduced. A greater range of recipes from around the world are used to expand learning and provide different food experiences.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils will be able to name foods that are familiar to them.
  • Pupils can name some basic kitchen equipment.
  • Pupils will be able to wash their hands.
  • Pupils can follow instructions.
  • Pupils should know how to use a range of small tools.
