Writing captions about people who help us
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can name and write captions for people who help us in the community.
Key learning points
- A noun is a naming word, such as a "dentist"
- A noun is a person, place or thing
- If a noun has a specific name of someone or something, it needs a capital letter, such as "Lily" or "England"
- Sounding out a word before writing helps to spell a word
- Reading back writing is important to check it is correct and makes sense
Keywords
Caption - a brief description or word labelling an image
Noun - a naming word for people, places or things
Common noun - a naming word that does not need a capital letter
Proper noun - a naming word that always has a capital letter
Capital letter - the upper case formation of a letter
Common misconception
Pupils may be unsure of what a noun is and so, unable to understand their caption is a noun.
Teach the 'Year 1 Word Class Grammar Unit' at the same time as this so the children can have explicit teaching of nouns and word class.
Teacher tip
Make use of your school's phonics scheme visuals and strategies to support writing. Encourage sounding out and plausible spelling based on their phonics teaching. If necessary, provide a word bank for pupils as an additional scaffold.
Equipment
You will need a copy of the 2020 Hodder Children's Books edition of 'A Superhero Like You' by Dr. Ranj.
