Applying the spellings 'er', 'ir' and 'ur' in familiar words

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can spell words containing three representations of the ‘er’ phoneme: 'er', 'ir' and 'ur'.

      Key learning points

      1. er', 'ir' and 'ur' are common representations of the 'er' phoneme.
      2. How to spell the common exception words: have, live and love.

      Keywords

      • Syllable - a single sound or beat in a word that contains a vowel sound

      • Stressed sound - an emphasised sound

      • Unstressed sound - a sound not emphasised or pronounced with much force

      Common misconception

In the dictated sentence, pupils may write the word 'its' with an apostrophe for posession.

Explain this word is an exception and an apostrophe is only used for the contracted form of 'it is'.

      Teacher tip

Ensure to quickly gloss any unfamiliar vocabulary (or show an image), such as fern. You can adapt or add other 'er', 'ir' and 'ur' words to the lists that you want to focus on for spelling.
