Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on punctuation rules with capital letters and full stops reviewed in the Year 2 grammar unit 'Adverbial complex sentences'. The unit also sits alongside spelling units of work in which pupils will have learnt words that include apostrophes. Pupils learn that an apostrophe can take the place of one or more letters in a contraction or that an apostrophe can signal a noun belonging to a singular noun in a possessive phrase. This unit prepares pupils for further apostrophe work in the Year 3 grammar unit 'Speech first punctuation and apostrophes'.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Punctuation helps form grammar rules to use the English language correctly.
  • One piece of punctuation can have more than one purpose.
  • Word class helps to form complete sentences that make sense.
  • Understanding word class helps us when we are writing.

Apostrophes

In this unit, pupils are introduced to the two rules for apostrophe use. They learn to use an apostrophe to contract two words, including the examples 'won't' and 'can't', and to use an apostrophe for singular possession. Pupils learn the formal conventions of both of these apostrophe functions.
