This unit prepares pupils for further apostrophe work in the Year 3 grammar unit 'Speech first punctuation and apostrophes'.

- One piece of punctuation can have more than one purpose.
- Word class helps to form complete sentences that make sense.
- Understanding word class helps us when we are writing.

Apostrophes
In this unit, pupils are introduced to the two rules for apostrophe use. They learn to use an apostrophe to contract two words, including the examples 'won't' and 'can't', and to use an apostrophe for singular possession. Pupils learn the formal conventions of both of these apostrophe functions.
