      Why this why now

This unit reinforces pupils' skills in forming capital letters and numerals with greater consistency and accuracy, building on their learning in previous units. By revisiting key learning points and regularly practising letter and numeral formation, pupils strengthen their control, precision, and attention to detail. This prepares them to integrate capital letters and numerals smoothly into their writing, enhancing legibility and overall handwriting quality as they approach more complex tasks in future units.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
      • The letter names for all 26 letters of the alphabet.
      • The difference between capital and lower case letters.
      • Knowledge of the formation of all lower-case letters in print form.
      • The ability to hold a pencil in a comfortable tripod grip.
      • How to sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortably and correctly.
