Why this why now

This unit builds on the Year 1 unit 'Anna Hibiscus' song: reading and writing', where pupils began to explore and describe a range of emotions, such as happiness. Here, pupils learn new words to describe their feelings, as well as words associated with friendship and inspiration. They learn different synonyms and how to make precise word choices. This unit prepares pupils for learning a wider range of vocabulary to describe characters, including big, beautiful and eye words in the Year 3 unit 'Character: big, beautiful and eye words'.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • People can feel different ways at any point
  • There are words which we use to describe how we are feeling
  • Happiness, sadness, frustration and anger might be words used to describe how someone is feeling
