Developing vocabulary associated with friendship
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can effectively use new vocabulary associated with friendship.
Key learning points
- 'Compassionate' is an adjective which means feeling somebody else’s pain and wanting to help.
- 'Shy' is an adjective which means feeling nervous around other people.
- 'Included' and 'respectful' are other adjectives that are associated with friendship.
- Word choices must be precise in writing and speaking.
Keywords
Adjective - a word that describes a noun
Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word
Common misconception
Pupils may be confused by the adjective 'included' and use it as a verb.
Model using 'included' in sentences as a verb and also as an adjective. This is a good opportunity to recap word classes.
Teacher tip
Start the lesson by discussing what it means to be a good friend and what pupils consider to be important qualities in a good friend. You could ask pupils, 'What are examples of good friendships in books, TV and films?'
