      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can effectively use new vocabulary associated with sadness.

      Key learning points

      1. 'Heartbroken' is an adjective which means feeling very upset and sad about something.
      2. 'Sulky' is an adjective which means being quiet and grumpy and moping about.
      3. 'Disappointed' and 'miserable' are other adjectives associated with sadness.
      4. Word choices must be precise in writing and speaking.

      Keywords

      • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

      • Adjective - a word that describes a noun

      Common misconception

Pupils may find it challenging to use 'sulky' as an adjective and 'sulking' as a verb in sentences.

Model sentences using both 'sulky' and 'sulking'. Use this an opportunity to recap word classes.

      Teacher tip

Pupils may find it difficult or upsetting to discuss moments that have made them feel sad. Consider teaching this lesson as you would a PSHE lesson and go through the ground rules of discussions around emotions and personal feelings.
