This unit builds on pupils' letter formation skills by introducing the more challenging techniques involved in writing numerals. Pupils develop their spatial awareness and understanding of direction when learning to form each numeral. They also build on their understanding of when continuous motion is required and when to lift the pencil. Mastering the precise movements required for numeral formation helps pupils develop more fluid and precise handwriting. This provides a solid foundation for the more advanced skills involved in learning the four joins and letter strings in future units.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Knowledge that numbers can be represented by a numeral.
- Recognition of the numerals 0-10.
- The ability to hold a pencil in a comfortable tripod grip.
- The ability to write recognisable print letters, most of which are correctly formed.
- Showing accuracy and care when drawing.
