Writing the beginning of the story: 'The Magic Porridge Pot'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can write the beginning of the story.

      Key learning points

      1. Every sentence must start with a capital letter and end with a full stop
      2. The beginning of a story introduces the main characters, setting and plot
      3. Word banks can be used to find key vocabulary or words that may be difficult to spell, such as 'cottage' or 'magical'
      4. Rehearsing a sentence out loud before writing it helps us to remember it
      5. Reading a sentence back after writing helps to check it makes sense

      Keywords

      • Character - a person or an animal in a story

      • Setting - where the story takes place

      • Plot - what happens in the story

      • Beginning - the start of something

      • Adjective - describes a noun

      Common misconception

Children may struggle to generate individual sentences per event.

Refer to the story mountain that the children made in a previous lesson and make that available. When retelling and reading the story, refer back to the model story mountain. Explain that each picture is one sentence.

      Teacher tip

Provide pupils with images from the story and word banks for people, places and things. Add adjectives that the pupils have generated throughout the unit.
