Common misconception
It can be hard to identify the sounds a word makes when looking at the spelling.
Encourage children to listen to the word without looking at the spelling. Stretch the word and identify each sound in turn.
Teacher tip
Give the children a selection of word cards with words containing the letter c. Ask them to physically group the words based on the sound the letter c makes. Include those with the 'sh' sound and 'ch', such as 'cello' or 'special'.
