More rich vocabulary associated with cold words
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can use the words 'frosty', 'numbing' and 'penetrating' effectively in multiple contexts.
Key learning points
- 'Frosty' is an adjective which means freezing or icy.
- 'Numbing' is an adjective which means ice-cold or freezing.
- 'Penetrating' is an adjective which means piercing or sharp.
Keywords
Noun - a naming word for people, places or things
Adjective - a word that describes a noun
Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word
Word pair - words that often appear together
Etymology - the study of the origin of words and the ways their meanings have changed over time
Common misconception
Pupils might find it difficult to understand how a 'stare' or a 'silence' could be described as 'frosty'.
Ensure pupils understand that 'frosty' can also be used to describe something as 'unwelcoming'.
Teacher tip
You could discuss how positive/ negative each word is. Numbing is an interesting one because numbing cold might seem like a negative thing and yet it would be a good thing to have some numbing cream ahead of an injection.
