'When Stars are Scattered': book club

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

      Threads

      Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge and understanding of graphic novels, which was explored in 'El Deafo: book club'. In this unit, pupils respond to a memoir in graphic novel form with increasingly mature themes, exploring the refugee experience. Pupils engage with the themes of perserverance and hope and share their own unique, take-away ideas from the text. This unit prepares pupils for the future unit, 'No Country and Frizzy: graphic novels exploring identity and belonging', where they will explore a fictional narrative with some similar themes.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Ability to read both text and image in graphic novels, inferring possible meaning.
      • Read 'When Stars are Scattered'.
      • Ability to listen to and respond to other people's ideas, thoughts and opinions.
      • Ability to decode text fluently at an age-appropriate level.
