Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Many word-final consonants in French are not pronounced.
  2. ‘Salut’ ('hi') is a more informal greeting than ‘bonjour’ ('hello').
  3. The irregular verb ‘être’ means to be, being.
  4. ‘Je suis’ means ‘I am’; ‘elle, il est’ means ‘she, he is’; the -s and -t are silent final consonants.

Keywords

  • SFC (Silent Final Consonant) - silent letter (d, s, t, x) at the end of a word

  • Être - French verb meaning 'to be, being'

  • Je suis - French verb meaning 'I am'

  • Elle est, il est - French verb meaning 'she is, he is'

Common misconception

Consonants at the end of words are pronounced in French.

Often, consonants are silent at the end of words in French. The exception to this rule are the letters c, r, f and l, which are pronounced.

Teacher tip

Playing a previously learnt song at the beginning of the lesson is a great way to help pupils settle swiftly into a language lesson, encourage participation and motivation by joining in straight from the start and tune in to the sounds of the new language.
