Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Silent final consonants can be practised by reading familiar and unfamiliar words aloud.
  2. 'Je suis' means 'I am'; 'elle, il est' means 'she, he is'; the -s and -t are silent final consonants.
  3. Adjectives often add -e to describe a girl or woman.

Keywords

  • SFC (Silent Final Consonant) - silent letter (d, s, t, x) at the end of a word

  • Être - French verb meaning 'to be, being'

  • Je suis - French verb meaning 'I am'

  • Elle est, il est - French verb meaning 'she is, he is'

  • Adjective agreement - a change in adjective ending, for example, adding -e to describe a girl or woman

Common misconception

French adjectives never change form.

French adjectives do change; this is called adjective agreement. One change is to match the gender of the person described.

Teacher tip

Next lesson, take the register in French using 'je suis présent/présente' and 'il/elle est absent/absente'.
