      Key learning points

      1. Pre-rehearsal, focusing on range of language and accuracy of pronunciation, improves performance in speaking tasks.
      2. Being able to apply word patterns, such as creating antonyms or adverbs from adjectives, expands our vocabulary.
      3. Listening to texts and identifying sound-spelling links is crucial to good pronunciation of trickier sounds e.g. im/in.

      Keywords

      • Adverb - word that describes a verb or an adjective

      • Antonym - a word that has the opposite meaning to another word

      Common misconception

To create antonyms in French, always add the prefix in- to the start of an adjective or adverb e.g. 'utile' becomes 'inutile'.

Some antonyms are formed by adding the prefix im-. This is when the original word begins with p, b or m: possible become impossible; buvable (drinkable) becomes imbuvable (undrinkable); 'mature' becomes 'immature'.

      Teacher tip

Task B1 has two options: Option 1 aimed at the majority of students; Option 2: aimed at students who may need a simplified text to enable them to succeed.

      Equipment
