Le sport pour tous: negation in the perfect tense

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explore the importance of inclusivity in sport, expanding my sporting vocabulary and using four negative structures accurately.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. 'Ne ... pas', 'ne ... rien', and 'ne ... jamais' all wrap around the auxiliary verb in the perfect tense.
      2. 'Ne ... personne' is different to other negatives in the past tense. 'Personne' comes after the past participle.
      3. Present and perfect tenses can be usefully combined to talk about sporting personalities, achievements and events.

      Keywords

      • Negation - two elements, e.g. 'ne ... pas', around the main verb expressing negative meaning

      • Ne ... personne - not anyone, no one

      Common misconception

The negative structure 'ne ... personne' is used in the same way as 'ne ... pas' and 'ne ... jamais' in the perfect tense.

'Personne' goes after the past participle instead of after the auxiliary verb. Careful study and practice is required to master this structure.

      Teacher tip

For the final writing task, encourage students to use a broad range of vocabulary to give details about their chosen sportsperson. The photographs are suggestions only and pupils may wish to choose a different athlete to describe.
