Découvrir d'autres pays : prepositions and emphatic pronouns 'nous' and 'vous'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of living abroad, focusing on the use of prepositions and emphatic pronouns.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Nasal vowel sounds occur when one or more vowels precede a nasal consonant e.g. an, am, ain, on, en.
      2. The emphatic pronouns 'nous' and 'vous' are used for 'us' and 'you' (plural/formal).
      3. sans (without), pour (for), avant (before) and chez (at the house/place of) are all followed by emphatic pronouns.

      Keywords

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

      • Emphatic pronoun - used to emphasize a person, or when the pronoun stands alone, or after certain prepositions

      Common misconception

'Nous' always means 'we' in French.

'Nous' means 'we' when used as a subject pronoun. 'Nous' means 'us' when used as an emphatic pronoun.

      Teacher tip

On slide 18, listening out for new words in context, listen first before revealing the rest of the slide. The new vocabulary is then animated to appear, followed by the text as a whole.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens would be useful if available.
