Key learning points
- Ordinal numbers are created by (removing -e and) adding -ième to a number: deuxième, onzième.
- in- or im- can be added to adjectives, adverbs or nouns to give the opposite meaning. English equivalent is un- or in-.
- The letter [x] can be heard before a vowel. This is called liaison and is common in ordinal numbers.
- [in] sounds like 'train' and [im] sounds like 'faim': incorrect, impossible.
Keywords
Cardinal number - number form that shows how many of something there are
Ordinal number - number form that shows position or order of something in a list e.g. first, second, third
Common misconception
The letter x in the words 'sixième' and 'dixième' is pronounced the same as in English.
The letter x is pronounced as z due to liaison in these words and should be carefully practised to develop an authentic pronunciation.
Teacher tip
A brief explanation of what cardinal and ordinal numbers are is in the slide deck but you may wish to go into this in more detail if there is a need to. Task B4 has Options 1 and 2. Option 2 is aimed at students who do not need exposure to more challenging vocabulary and structures.
