On cherche un boulot : adjectives into adverbs

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can apply rules to convert adjectives into adverbs to add detail when discussing jobs and finding work.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. [en/an] sound like 'enfant', [è] sounds like 'tête' and [i] sounds like 'midi'.
      2. Some adverbs are formed by adding -ment to the feminine form of adjectives when the English adverb equivalent is -ly.
      3. Where the adjective ends in e in the masculine form, add -ment to form the adverb e.g. rapide - rapidement.
      4. Some adverbs are formed by dropping -ant(e)/-ent (e) and adding -(am)ment/-(em)ment when the English equivalent is -ly.

      Keywords

      • Adjective - word that gives information about a noun

      • Adverb - word that describes a verb or an adjective

      Common misconception

All words ending in -ment are adverbs.

Whilst many words ending in -ment are adverbs where the feminine form of the adjective has been taken and -ment added to create the adverb, not all words ending in -ment are adverbs. Some nouns end in -ment e.g. 'le règlement' rule, regulation.

      Teacher tip
