Un pays francophone : present tense, prepositions 'à', 'de' and 'en'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe a Francophone country and demonstrate understanding of differences between Francophone countries.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. There are many 'Francophone' (French-speaking) countries to explore around the world.
      2. The prepositions à, de and en have many different functions and context must be used when translating into English.
      3. It is helpful to reference Francophone countries whenever possible in writing and speaking.

      Keywords

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

      Common misconception

The ideas 'to', 'in', 'of' always have the same translation in French.

Prepositions are tricky to master in another language. Students should be given plenty of practice of 'à', 'en' and 'de' to see how their use varies according to context.

      Teacher tip

For Task B2 pupils write about life in Quebec or other French-speaking region. There is plenty of online content on aspects of the Quebec Winter Carnival– Bonhomme Carnaval, parades, ice sculptures, canoe race, snow bath and 'tire d'érable', the candy made by pouring hot maple syrup onto snow.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens would be useful, if available.
