In this unit pupils secure and expand their understanding of present tense regular -er and -re verbs in all persons. This is gateway knowledge which they have covered in KS3 and need to master for KS4, where conjugating verbs competently is key to communicating effectively. Pupils will expand their personal repertoire of verbs, and learn to identify different categories of -re verbs, in order to be able to work more independently. Pupils will also build on their knowledge of some common sound-symbol correspondences, beginning to apply these more consistently and also identifying exceptions.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know: SSC [-er/-ez/-é], SFe (Silent Final 'e'), SFC (Silent Final Consonant), [on]
  • Pupils know all persons of present tense regular -er verbs (like parler)
  • Pupils know all subject pronouns (je, tu, il(s), elle(s), on, nous, vous)
  • Pupils know both meanings of 'on' and 'vous'
  • Pupils can use 'il(s)' and 'elle(s)' for things (as well as people)
  • Pupils can use two-verb constructions with aimer

This unit revisits subject pronouns, -er and -re verbs in the present tense, and two-verb constructions with 'aimer' in the context of describing free time activities. It also consolidates silent final letters, and the sound-symbol correspondences [-er,-ez,-é], [on], [en,an] and hard [s].
