I can use the present, future and conditional to compare where I currently live and would ideally like to live in the future.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Time markers and conjunctions, combined with different verb tenses, help a reader to follow a text more easily.
      2. Include a range of verbs in future and conditional when describing future plans and wishes.
      3. The conditional can be used to compare real and ideal situations.

      Keywords

      • Conditional - a form of verb that expresses what would happen

      Common misconception

The conditional can always be used on its own without a prior conditional being described.

Apart from the verbs 'aimer' and 'vouloir', always use the conditional form of verb with a 'si' + imperfect sentence. It is not logical to say in French 'I would buy a villa' without an accompanying condition e.g. if I had lots of money.

      Teacher tip

It might be useful to ask students to colour code their notes for task B3 to quickly check that they have included the desirable elements e.g. present tense, 1-verb future tense, conditional verb etc.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens, if available, are useful for the quick checking for understanding tasks in the lesson.
