Key learning points

  1. The River Thames was one of the earliest transport routes: people travelled up and down the river in boats for trade.
  2. London is famous for its red double decker buses, black taxi cabs and its London Underground tube trains.
  3. There are special rules to help keep the most polluting cars out of central London.
  4. To reduce pollution, a network of bicycles and electric scooters are available to hire in London.

Keywords

  • Trade - Trade is the buying and selling of goods and services between people, companies and countries.

  • Public transport - Public transport is the shared use of vehicles such as trains, buses, trams and planes on routes where people pay fares.

  • London Underground - The London Underground is a public transport system of trains that travel through tunnels under the city.

  • Congestion - Congestion is where there is too much traffic and movement is difficult.

  • Pollution - Pollution is anything that makes the environment dirty or unhealthy.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that all buses are red, and all taxi cabs are black or all trains are tube trains.

These types of transport are symbolic of London, but they are not the only ones in the city; there are many buses and taxis in a variety of colours and there are overground trains as well as underground tube trains.

Compare the ways that people get around in London with the ways that people get around where you live. How are they similar and how are they different?
