Planning a day out in London
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain how to travel to London, describe the landmarks you would like to visit on a day out and how to plan a route around them, using maps and geographical vocabulary.
Key learning points
- There are many different ways to travel to London such as long distance trains, or national and international flights.
- Travel guides can help you decide where you want to go when you are visiting a new place, like London.
- Once in London, maps and travel tools can help you identify the best routes to get to where you need to go.
- Locating the landmarks and places you want to visit will help you map the best route to see as many of them as possible.
Keywords
Travel - To travel is to make a journey from one place to another
Travel guide - A travel guide is a book or online resource that tells you about visiting a place
Route - A route shows the starting point and end point of a journey, sometimes with stops in between
Flight - A flight is a journey by aeroplane
Common misconception
Pupils are still developing understanding of the concept of quantifying time and as such they can significantly overestimate how much they can do and see in just one day.
Remind pupils to think about all the things that we have to do around visiting attractions, how long will it take to get to an attraction, what type of transport is best to take, what about time for meal breaks.
Teacher tip
Ask pupils to choose a number of London attractions and then use a map of the London Underground to locate their nearest tube station.
