Geographical features in England

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can locate and name some of England's geographical features using atlases, maps, photographs and Google Earth.

Key learning points

  1. England is mountainous in the north and west, and flatter in the south and east.
  2. Most people in the UK live in England; there are lots of cities, towns and villages.
  3. The countryside in England has smaller towns and villages, farmland, forests, lakes and moorland.
  4. England's coastline has many sandy beaches.

Keywords

  • Town - A town is a settlement that is usually larger than a village but smaller than a city.

  • Mountain - A mountain is a natural raised part of Earth’s surface that is higher than a hill.

  • Coastline - A coastline is the boundary between the land and the sea or ocean.

  • Moorland - Moorland is found in hilly areas and has poor soils and few trees.

Common misconception

There are not many people who live in rural areas in England.

In 2020, 12.0 million people lived in rural areas – this is 21.3% of the England population (gov. website)

Teacher tip

If you are undertaking all lessons 3 to 6, Task B can be completed on one map of the UK to build up a full map of feature locations.
