Why this why now
This unit develops pupils’ understanding of global interdependence by exploring how goods are produced and traded. Its placement builds on earlier work on food systems and energy use, enabling pupils to examine how natural resources, transport and human decisions shape what we buy and use. Pupils explore trade routes, supply chains, and ethical issues, and begin to reflect on the economic and environmental consequences of global trade. This prepares them to think critically about fairness, sustainability and the human impact of everyday choices.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Knowledge of the diversity of physical and human geography at a global scale.
- Knowledge of the historic and contemporary movement of goods, people and ideas, including some aspects of international trade.
