Example of a tropical storm
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain the location of Typhoon Rai and understand the effects and responses to it.
Key learning points
- Location and track of Typhoon Rai.
- Typhoon Rai had primary and secondary effects.
- There were immediate and long-term responses to Typhoon Rai.
Keywords
Typhoon - a tropical cyclone occurring in the western Pacific or Indian oceans
Primary effects - the immediate effects of a natural disaster
Secondary effects - indirect impacts that arise after an event, they often happen because of the primary effects
Response - action taken to address the impacts of a disaster
Common misconception
Tropical storms only affect people during and immediately after they make landfall.
Due to improved monitioring and prediction, people may evacuate high-risk areas before a storm hits, and the effects of the storm can last for months afterwards as people repair and recover their homes, environments and livelihoods.
Teacher tip
To gain a better understanding, the use of newspaper articles and video clips will help. It may also be helpful to look at the impact of a tropical storm of similar strength that made landfall in a high income country, to compare the effects and responses.
