Characteristics and factors influencing different urban land uses

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe and explain different urban land uses.

      Key learning points

      1. There are a variety of urban land uses.
      2. Urban land uses (commercial, industrial and residential) have different characteristics.
      3. Several factors influence urban land use, including accessibility, availability, cost and planning regulations.

      Keywords

      • Commercial - a land use category used for areas that trade goods and services

      • CBD - central business district; the commercial centre of an urban area

      • Brownfield site - an area of land that was formerly used for something but which is now abandoned or derelict

      • Greenbelt - a ring of land that surrounds some UK urban areas where new constructions are regulated to prevent urban sprawl

      Common misconception

House prices will decrease the further one gets from the CBD.

The price per square metre may decrease as one moves further from the CBD, but as homes get larger with that distance, one cannot say that they get cheaper overall.

      Teacher tip

Where possible, contextualise the ideas in this lesson by using a town or city that the students are likely to know well.
