Contrasting urban economies in developing, emerging and developed countries
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain the links between a country's level of development and the nature of employment there.
Key learning points
- There are four sectors of employment.
- Different urban economies are defined by these sectors.
- Formal and informal employment create different working conditions in urban economies.
Keywords
Economic sector - a category of economic activity where jobs are grouped together based on their type of work
Formal employment - employment that is officially recognised and regulated
Informal employment - employment that lacks official recognition and has no regulation
Common misconception
Those in informal employment are unskilled.
Just because work is unregulated it does not mean that the workers are unskilled. While some workers may not have official certification of skills, they still possess expertise.
Teacher tip
Use online search engines to find examples in images of employment in other countries. Question with students the extent to which the images conform to stereotypes or reflect the actual employment opportunities in a country.
