Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Future plans can be expressed by using the present tense with a future adverb of time.
      2. The adjective ‘nächst-’ takes different endings depending on the gender of the noun it is describing ('nächstes Jahr').
      3. We translate the German present tense for future meaning into English using the present continuous.
      4. It is important to plan carefully and to be able to write in three different time frames when writing a longer text.
      5. Using the acronym BORDER is a good way to make sure you successfully cover every aspect of a writing task.

      Keywords

      • Adverb of time - word that modifies a verb by informing us when or how often something occurs

      • Time frame - a period of time during which something happens; refers to present, past or future

      • BORDER - acronym for extended writing

      Common misconception

Only the tense of the verb can tell us whether a sentence is referring to present, past or future events.

Adverbs of time are also very important in helping us to identify time frames, particularly when the present tense is used for future meaning.

      Teacher tip

It might be helpful for students to work in pairs to identify the different components of BORDER in their final written answers in Task B2. Pupils may benefit from developing their own personalised accuracy checklists for extended writing too.
