Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The conjunction 'obwohl', meaning 'although', triggers word order 3, sending the verb to the end of the clause.
      2. If 'obwohl' starts the sentence, use verb-comma-verb word order when linking to the next clause or sentence.
      3. 'Obwohl' can be used to develop and extend ideas by linking two sentences together.
      4. In a role-play, you are required to say a short phrase in response to each prompt.
      5. You must include at least one verb in each role-play answer, and you have to ask at least one question.

      Keywords

      • Obwohl - conjunction meaning 'although' which triggers word order 3

      • Word order 3 (WO3) - after certain conjunctions, the verb is sent to the end of the sentence or clause

      • Role-play - a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation

      Common misconception

The conjunction 'obwohl' has the same effect on word order whether it starts the sentence or a second clause in a sentence.

The conjunction 'obwohl' always triggers word order 3 in a clause. However, if the sentence starts with the 'obwohl' clause, we then use the verb-comma-verb rule, meaning the second clause starts with the verb.

      Teacher tip

Edexcel role-plays address the candidates using 'Sie' and are set in formal transactional scenarios, as in Task C1. Teachers preparing students for AQA might wish to adapt the role-play teacher prompts to the 'du' form and adapt the question in the final prompt to suit an informal conversation.
