I can use modal verbs to talk about what I want, must, and can do, describe a photo and develop my answers in conversation about future plans.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Modal verbs are usually used with a second verb in the infinitive at the end of the sentence or clause.
      2. The stems of some modal verbs are irregular, with vowel changes in most singular forms.
      3. When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood. Add your own opinions too.
      4. It is helpful to predict follow-up questions on a theme for developing conversation after describing a photo.
      5. In conversation, develop answers by adding opinions and reasons, varying the subject, and adding different time frames.

      Keywords

      • Modal verb - verb of necessity, possibility, expectation or obligation used with a 2nd verb in the infinitive

      • PALM - an acronym to summarise what to include in a photo description: People, Action, Location, Mood

      Common misconception

When developing a conversation about future plans, it is important to consistently use the future time frame in answers.

Whilst it is important to be able to refer to the future confidently, it is also helpful to add in different time frames to give more detail and to develop your sentences.

      Teacher tip

Repeating speaking activities such as the photo description and conversation again immediately, once or more, will help improve fluency and deepen knowledge.
