Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Some prepositions are always followed by the accusative case: 'durch', 'für', 'ohne', 'gegen'.
      2. Masculine definite article 'der' changes to 'den' in the accusative case.
      3. Some verbs are followed by prepositions which take the accusative case.
      4. Verbs which are followed by prepositions often use different prepositions in English.

      Keywords

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word; also used after some verbs

      • Accusative case - usually used to indicate the direct object of a verb; also used after some prepositions

      • Definite article - word for 'the' which may change according to gender, number and case

      Common misconception

English verbs followed by prepositions can be directly translated into German.

Whilst many of the same verbs are followed by prepositions in both languages, different prepositions are often used, so these must be learnt.

      Teacher tip

The verbs 'kämpfen (für)', 'schießen (auf)' and 'reagieren (auf)' are Higher only.
