Explain how one hundred thousand can be composed
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain how one hundred thousand can be composed
Key learning points
- Ten ten thousands make one hundred thousand.
- One hundred one thousands make one hundred thousand.
- One thousand one hundreds make one hundred thousand.
Keywords
Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.
Equivalent - Two expressions are equivalent if they have the same value.
Common misconception
Pupils attempt to learn how many tens, hundreds and thousands there are in 100,000 as a set rule rather than develop a sense for this.
Building and breaking 100,000 in different ways can be a really effective way to develop a sense of the number. You could use base 10 blocks to build up to 100,000 where a one cube could be redefined as 100 and then use plasticine to create 10 and 1.
Teacher tip
Take time to discuss how pupils reason their thinking in Task B about what is greater than or less than 100,000, emphasising how working out the value of a smaller amount can then be scaled up. For example, how many breaths are taken in one minute, one hour then one day?
