Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can manipulate percentages of an amount without a representation.

Key learning points

  1. Percent relates to the number of parts per hundred.
  2. Percentages can be written as a fraction out of 100.
  3. The equivalence of fractions, decimals and percentages can be used to solve problems.
  4. Percentages of amounts can be calculated by using known fractions.

Keywords

  • Equivalent fractions - Two fractions are equivalent if they have the same value.

Common misconception

When finding 10% we divide by 10, so when finding 5% we divide by 5.

Use a bar model to show the division of 10 means one tenth of the amount. When dividing by 5 it means one fifth has been found.

Teacher tip

Ask pupils to use MWB and draw a spider diagram showing as many percentages of ANY amount they choose e.g 240 and they show 10% = 24, 5%=12, etc. Asking them to remove the central number (100%) and their peers must work out the original amount.
