Compose and create: soundscapes of the sea
Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.
Why this why now
Pupils are given the opportunity to develop their creative music skills further, composing and improvising in a way that offers plenty of freedom of expression. Pupils can use their composition skills developed in other key stage one units alongside their working knowledge of the musical elements to create soundscapes as part of an ensemble with greater freedom than before. Due to the freedom of composition suggested in the soundscapes, this unit can be placed at any point across the key stage, with the compositional, performance and ensemble outcomes adjusted accordingly.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils have experienced playing a range of pitched and unpitched classroom percussion.
- Pupils know a percussion instrument makes a sound when it is struck, shaken or scraped.
- Pupils have experience of using appropriate words to describe sounds or the timbre of an instrument.
- Pupils have experience of making music together and working in small groups to prepare for a performance.
- Pupils have experience of manipulating the musical elements to create music, for example creating a rhythm or changing the tempo.

Compose and create: soundscapes of the sea
In this unit, water and classical music examples inspire soundscape compositions as we journey from beach, to open water, rivers and stormy seas. Pupils use pitched and unpitched percussion, vocalisations and body percussion to create their soundscapes, recording these using graphic scores.
