Compose and create: nature documentary inspired film scores

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

Why this why now

Pupils are given the opportunity to develop their creative music skills further, composing and improvising in a way that offers plenty of freedom of expression and the chance to explore technology in music. Pupils can use their composition skills developed in other upper key stage two units, alongside their working knowledge of the musical elements to create film music with greater freedom than before. Due to the freedom of composition suggested in the lessons, this unit can be placed at any point across the key stage, with the compositional outcomes adjusted accordingly.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils have had lots of experience playing classroom percussion instruments.
  • Pupils have experienced composing over time and have some experience of honing and improving their ideas.
  • If using a DAW, pupils have experience using a tablet, laptop or Chromebook in the classroom.
  • Pupils can listen with concentration to longer excerpts of music.
  • Pupils know the elements of music and have experience of manipulating these to alter a performance or composition.
