      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify different sporting injuries and suggest how to treat soft tissue injuries.

      Key learning points

      1. Concussion is the sudden but short-lived loss of mental function that occurs after a blow to the head.
      2. A fracture is a partial or complete break in a bone that occurs when subjected to more force than it can withstand.
      3. A strain is a muscular injury that occurs when the muscle is overstretched or torn.
      4. A sprain is a joint injury that occurs when the ligament is overstretched or torn.
      5. Repetitive actions can inflame tendons, as is the case with golfer's elbow and tennis elbow.

      Keywords

      • Concussion - temporary unconsciousness or confusion caused by a blow on the head

      • Fracture - the cracking or breaking of a bone

      • Dislocation - injury caused when the normal position of a joint is displaced

      • Sprain - a overstretching or tearing of ligaments

      • Strain - an overstretched or torn muscle

      Common misconception

RICE is the treatment required for all injuries.

RICE in only suitable for soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains. For other types of injuries , other types of medical care should be sought.

      Teacher tip

Concussion is a pertinent topic in recent times which there is not enough scope in this lesson to discuss but would be an intersting topic for further discussion with students or a homework research task.
