      Data analysis and evaluation

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can analyse and evaluate data using various methods.

      Key learning points

      1. To analyse data means to examine and interpret the information presented.
      2. Analysis involves identifying the impact of patterns, trends, relationships, and anomalies in the data.
      3. Evaluation means to critically assess and judge the effectiveness based on data and evidence.
      4. Evaluation involves considering multiple perspectives, weighing the pros and cons to inform your judgements.

      Keywords

      • Analyse - separate information into components and identify their characteristics

      • Evaluate - judge from available evidence

      • Trend - a direction in which something is developing/changing

      Common misconception

To analyse data you just need to explain what the data is demonstrating.

The analysis skill goes a little further and looks at patterns / trends / relationships in the context of data provided.

      Teacher tip

Make data tasks / lessons explicit and not only allow students to collect and present data but provide time for analysis and evaluation tasks. Build into your scheme of learning for paper 1 regular data based lessons. This is a good opportunity to practice the skills for excel spreadsheets.

      Equipment

graph paper, up to date sport, exercise and PE data and trends
