Key learning points
- Using a checklist before a read-aloud task is a powerful and effective strategy.
- In a read-aloud task, think carefully about how to correctly pronounce the letters in each word and spot tricky sounds.
- Considering cognates and mentally rehearsing the text are key steps in preparation for a read-aloud task.
- We can avoid distractors by not rushing to select an answer.
- Distractors can appear anywhere - in the question, the answer options or the text itself.
Keywords
Distractor - incorrect but plausible answer option in reading and listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail
Common misconception
The more times I read the text, the better I'll understand it.
Simply re-reading without purpose doesn't necessarily lead to better comprehension. Strategies such as reading through the text and questions, using each question to find the relevant part of the text, avoiding distractors, etc. are more effective.
