      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use the subjunctive after verbs of command and request to suggest or ask others to do something, especially when planning a meal.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The subjunctive expresses uncertainty, wishes, emotions or future possibilities.
      2. Subjunctive verb forms include: 'ser' → 'sea', 'tener' → 'tenga', 'hacer' → 'haga' and 'ir' → 'vaya'.
      3. 'Querer', 'pedir', 'decir', 'insistir', 'recomendar', and 'sugerir' are verbs of command and request.
      4. Use a verb of command/request + 'que' + subjunctive when you want someone else to do something.
      5. When one person is doing the action, verbs of command/request are followed by an infinitive.

      Keywords

      • Subjunctive - verb form that indicates actions which are uncertain, wished for or that have not yet happened

      • Verb of command/request - expresses a command, suggestion or request for something to happen; these verbs often introduce the subjunctive after 'que'

      Common misconception

Command/request verbs are always followed by an infinitive, as in English, e.g. 'I want you to go', 'I'm asking you to leave'.

When the sentence refers to only one person, these verbs are followed by an infinitive, but if the sentence mentions two people, the command/request verbs are followed by a subjunctive.

      Teacher tip

The teacher might want to show students a short video on how to make tortilla de patatas. Another idea is to have a tortilla de patatas competition following a Spanish recipe.
