¡Qué emocionante! 'Ser' and 'estar' present

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use a variety of vocabulary and structures to talk about a festival in the Hispanic world.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. To form the present continuous, use 'estar' and a verb in the present participle (-ando, -iendo).
      2. In Spanish, there are two ways to say ‘to be’. Use ser with permanent traits and estar with location, states and moods.
      3. Extended reading texts can be exploited to enrich our thematic vocabulary and use of complex structures.
      4. It is important to communicate accurately but also to include varied and complex language.
      5. It is helpful to reference popular customs and celebrations in different Hispanic countries in this topic.

      Keywords

      • Estar - verb 'to be, being' used for location, states and moods

      • Present continuous - describes events happening right now: 'I am doing'

      • Present participle - verb form that forms the present continuous, together with the auxiliary verb 'estar'

      • Ser - verb 'to be, being' used for general traits

      Common misconception

'She, he is doing' translates as 'es haciendo' in Spanish.

'She, he is doing' is 'está haciendo'. To form the present continuous, use 'estar' and a verb in the present participle (-ando, -iendo).

      Teacher tip

Support can be provided through the model text included in Task C1. Encourage students to use this as a model. This is also a great opportunitiy to encourage students to curate their own topic-spcific vocabulary and structures related to the festivals they find more interesting.
