Why this why now
Pupils will already know the basics of play and relevant rules for handball from Key Stage 3 PE. This unit builds upon this by providing the opportunity to evaluate technique and practise some observation and analysis skills. Positioned during year 10, it will encourage engagement in extracurricular opportunities, including local clubs and competitions, which will allow further improvement of performance. This unit will help to prepare students for the practical GCSE moderation in Year 11.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know how to move the ball up the court.
- Pupils understand the importance of maintaining possession and also invading territory to create space to score in the goal.
- Pupils know the importance of screening and blocking opposition players to enable a turnover.
- Pupils understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative data through observation and analysis of performance

Non-examined assessment: handball practical
This unit provides pupils with the knowledge and opportunity to replicate skills in isolation and in performance scenarios in handball. As a team sport participated in by many pupils it will cover passing/ receiving, ball handling, dribbling, shooting, blocking, screening and decision making.
